We stayed at Orchha while going to Khajuraho from Jhansi only because my friend, Debraj, who had visited Orchha insisted that we should try the betwa cottages. We are eternally to him. It is a wonderful cottage set on the banks of river Betwa. It is a little away from the town and that is an advantage.
We had gone in August and hence the river was full and it is a sight to behold. That said, I must add here that Betwa cottage in summer might not be that interesting as the river could be bone dry. At the cottage we stayed at what is called as “Swiss tents”. It is a nice concept as the tent was more of a room in a two star resort than a tent. Only the toilet seats were in plastic and I wonder why. That said, the place had all the amenities that one can ask for – we stayed in non A/c rooms and they are very pleasant. More than the rooms it is the ambience – riverside, well maintained lawn that adds to the charm of Betwa cottages.
For the cheap tariff they have, it is an heaven. This resort is run by the MP Govt and I normally associate Government hotels as cheap and dingy. This is a welcome change. The resort also conducts river-rafting tour and it was one great experience. For the foodies, they have to soak the nature around, as the food is palatable and not exactly great.
Orchha by itself is a must visit place for those visiting Khajuraho. (It takes 4 hours by road to Khajuraho). Apparently, Orchha was once the capital of Bundela kingdom and it is no wonder that there are many palaces and temples – most of them are in ruins. MP tourism conducts a walk tour and you can check for the same at the office. Important sights are Chatturbuj Mandir, Ram Raj mandir where the idol of Ram is present. Near Ram Raja mandir are the ancient dastgirs which is an early form of central air conditioners.
All in all Orchha is a must add to the itinerary and I would strongly suggest betwa cottages. MP tourism also runs a more expensive Seesh mahal at Orchha
