In India,tourism is still a nascent industry and account for US$41.8-billion or 5.3% of GDP. The tourism potential represented by many and diverse attractions has hardly been exploited in an organized manner. Domestic tourists far outweigh in-bound international tourists. In 2009, there were estimated 650 Million domestic tourists as against an inbound arrival of 5.11 Million. Employee benefits (like leave travel concession) induced tourism, visit to relatives and pilgrimage trips are most popular tourist segments. Of late, Weekend travel has taken off in cities with concentration of working professionals like the cities of Mumbai, Delhi, Pune, Hyderabad and Bangalore.
There is a severe scarcity of quality hotel rooms across India. As per the Government’s own admission, there are Only 109,000 rooms in 1,980 hotels across the country that was registered in the official Hotel directory in the year 2006. Scarcity of hotel rooms in several cities such as Mumbai, Delhi and Bengaluru has resulted in rates of over US$300 per night.
Accommodation scene in India is dominated not by leading hotel chains but by many hotels and guest houses that are run by local entrepreneurs. The recent phenomemnon has been the homestays and Bed & breakfasts started by micro entreprenuers
