In India,tourism is still a nascent industry and account for US$41.8-billion or 5.3% of GDP. Of late, Weekend travel has taken off in cities with concentration of working professionals like the cities of Mumbai, Delhi, Pune, Hyderabad and Bangalore.
There is a severe scarcity of quality hotel rooms across India. As per the Government’s own admission, there are Only 109,000 rooms in 1,980 hotels across the country that was registered in the official Hotel directory in the year 2006. Scarcity of hotel rooms in several cities such as Mumbai, Delhi and Bengaluru has resulted in rates of over US$300 per night.
