Goa has some of the best beaches in the world - Long silver sand beaches that have become envy of many and pride of India. Goa shot into prominence as hippie centre - Westerners who gave in to the charms of Goa to escape the harsh realities of Vietnam War and its aftermath. With Hippes came liberal life style, all night trance parties and devil may care attitude. Much has changed now, the hippies have dwindled, Government has come down harshly on rave parties - but the spirit of Goa, "sussegado" (which loosely translates to "take it easy") continues.
Goa boasts of beaches at every nook and corner of its 65 Km coastline. Thirty of these beaches are popular and well documented in all travel books. Each of the beaches have an unique identity - That is true irrespective of whether the beach is big or small, popular or yet to be discovered. The sheer variety of beaches will ensure that you will find your perfect beach - whatever, is your definition of a perfect beach.
Goa beaches have traditionally been classified as North Goa beaches and South Goa beaches. North Goa beaches of Anjuna, Calangute, Vagator, Baga to name a few capture the true spirit of Goa. They are the party beaches where most of the westerners flock. In comparison, South Goa is more sedate and secluded. The sheer natural splendor of South Goa beaches make up for the apparent lack of action. Colva, Benaulim, Bogmalo and Palolem are some of the popular South Goa beaches. Most of the up-market resorts are in South Goa ,while North Goa offer simple budget accommodation that are popular with back packers.
