Candolim in Goa

Candolim is a long and narrow beach flanked by Calangute and Fort Aguada. At the first look, the beach might tend to be uninspiring. It just lacks the charisma of some of the neighboring beaches like Calangute, Anjuna or Harnal beach. However, once you get a chance to move around and explore, the beach tends to look lot more inviting

Fort Aguada

The star attraction at Candolim has to be the Fort Aguada built by Portuguese, in 16th century, to defend Goa against the attack by Marathas and Dutch. The climb atop the fort provides stunning view of Arabian Sea, Mandovi River and the beach. Best time to reach atop Fort Aguada would be in the evening to catch the sunset. On to the east of Fort Aguada is the famous Church of St. Lawrence – the patron saint of sailors, another not to be missed attraction of Candolim.

Goa Mansions

Candolim houses some of the most imposing mansions of Goa. Unfortunately, public are not allowed into many of these wonderful buildings. The best option for tourists to soak into culture and heritage of Goa is to visit Calizz, a private museum near to the beach housing some of the best artefacts found anywhere in Goa (Call +91 832 325 0000 before hand to fix appointment)

River Princess

The title of most unfortunate attraction of Candolim must go to the wreck of River Princess. A decade earlier, the ship belonging to one of Goa business magnate drifted onto the beach in one of the severe storms. Unfortunately, the ship was caught in a tussle between Government and the insurance company as to who will pick the tab to clear the ship from the beach. Despite the environment wreck posed by the ship, it has remained on the beach for over a decade and has become a tourist attraction of sorts.

Swimming and Water Sports

Please steer clear of swimming anywhere close to the wreck of River Princess, as spate of drowning incidents have been reported from Candolim.

There are plenty of water sports options available near Candolim beach. Apart from the usual para sailing, water skiing, try dolphin watch tour with a local fisherman and also calm boat ride up river Mandovi

Candolim Resorts and Accommodation

Candolim is almost a midpoint between South and North Goa. Given the location advantage, thousands of tourists (especially western charter tourists) throng to Candolim in season. To satiate their demand, many “hotel complexes” have mushroomed around Candolim beach. When Goa moved from attracting back packers to well heeled tourists, Candolim was selected as the location of choice in North Goa for some of the top end beach resorts.
