At 2,600 feet from sea level, the weather at Matheran is extremely pleasant all through the year, though Monsoons can be harsh at Matheran. Matheran literally translates to “Forest Top” and true to its name, Matheran retains lush greenery.

There are plenty of scenic viewpoints at Matheran. Popular ones include Panorama point (sunrise point, Porcupine point (Sun set point) and Lousia point. All the points are marked in the map handed to all tourists along with the entry ticket. As vehicles are prohibited at Matheran, the air is crisp and clear.

For many, the best accommodation options at Matheran are the family run resorts and Inns. Many of these resorts are set in grand heritage buildings of colonial era. The hosts are knowledgeable and go out of their way in ensuring that guests feel at home and enjoy their holiday.

In season, resorts are in demand and a prior booking is necessary. Most of the Matheran resorts and Inns have their head office in Mumbai and reservation is possible by contacting Mumbai office over the phone. Many of Matheran resorts are closed for Monsoons and if you are travelling during Monsoons, please do call before undertaking the journey.
