Murud Janjira Weekend Getaway Print

Image If you ever thought the phrase “Journey is the destination” was just a hyperbole, then you need to visit Murud – Janjira. The journey thru the palm fringed rounds and pristine beaches along the way are an experience in itself.

Reaching There: To reach Murud, take the Goa highway from Panvel. Detailed map from Panvel is provided here . The drive from Alibaug becomes very picturesque as you drive along the road guarded by palms on both sides. As you drive along, you will soon reach the beautiful beach of Kashid, which has one of the best beaches on the Konkan belt.

Weekend at kashid
Kashid Beach

Kashid Beach : It is relatively a small beach but the white sands make up for it. There are hammocks put up on the beach and you can laze around and have bhajias and enjoy the serene environment. The beach and the views are so good that you will be  tempted to stay at Kashid (instead of proceeding to Murud). You can give in to your temptations as there are accommodation options at Kashid too.

Janjira Fort:
To reach Janjira fort from Murud will entail an interesting 45-minute sail on a yacht.Yacht starts from Rajapuri jetty, which is a ten-minute drive from Murud. As the boatsman sails towards the fort, he will explain that entrance to the fort is well camouflaged and cannot be easily spotted. There are many interesting tales about Janjira fort. Habshibs, African Muslim slaves from Somalia built this fort nearly 350 years back. The ruler of the Habshi state of Murud-Janjira was known as the Siddi and the most famous of the Janjira fort was Siddi – Johar.  Siddis, who were sea pirates held the fort for a long time and remained unconquered though there were many attacks from by the Portuguese, the British, Shivaji, Knhoji Angre and Sambhaji. With a height of over 90ft above sea and 20 ft strong foundation, it took 22 years to build the fort and it remains a marvel even today.

Phansad Wildlife Sanctuary: It is a small sanctuary - all of 52.71 sq. km and was hunting preserve of the erstwhile Nawab of Murud. It is an unspolit forest area with thick vegetation. The Sanctuary is situated between Murud and Kashid.

Apart from the attractions mentioned above, there is an old Nawab's palace at Murud itself. However, entry to the palace is restricted and external facade gives an impression that we are not missing much.
