Tar balls spoil the beauty of Goa beaches
The worst hit beaches are the South Goa beaches that are popular as they are clean and relatively devoid of crowds. Goa authorities are collecting these huge balls and sending the same to refineries. Unfortunately, these tar balls have begun to harden into black lumps that are an eyesore. Meanwhile, the National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) based in Goa has affirmed that there has been no serious calamity to natural life and the pollution can be minimized. However, Goan residents claim that it is common to sight dead crabs, dolphins and other dead marine creatures being washed ashore.
>Tourism department of Goa are on overdrive to clean the beaches before the commencement of the peak season. Typically, monsoon months see lot of filth including oil spills getting washed ashore and the beaches are not exactly picture perfect. Shack owners take tremendous effort to clean the areas around the shack after they obtain the license and that’s how the famed beaches of Goa remain clean. This year, the problem seems to have compounded and has attracted media attention. Tourism industry of Goa is keeping their fingers crossed and hoping that the tar balls will not dampen the sentiment. Goa hosts nearly two million tourists during peak season months
