While I was working at Bangalore, I had the pleasure of having one Sidappa as my neighbor. He used to work as a manager in a State Government undertaking and every weekend used to whisk away to his native village near Madikeri – a good 5 hours by bus. Sidappa’s father once owned 10 acres of land, but life took a wrong turn and his father had to sell their land holdings. This was when Sidappa was just fifteen years old.  Love for fresh air, the smell of the earth and the Cauvery waters never left Sidappa and he had made an arrangement with his uncle to visit his village every weekend. Tempted by his description, I accompanied him once, twice and then almost every other weekend.

The good thing had to end. My employer opened a branch at Mumbai and I was sent to head the branch. For three years, I scouted around Mumbai to find a place that would replace Sidappa’s village as my ideal weekend retreat. I almost lost all hope, till I visited Doctor’s Farm at Kolad. It is just that – Doctor’s prescription for an ideal weekend retreat.

The unique shaped huts, large tract of farm, gentle river, birds, clear air - all add to the unique charm of Doctor’s Farm at Kolad. Apparently, the farm is uniquely placed between two dams and hence the river is calm . This makes it very safe. The farm also has a small pool where my four year old daughter can enjoy.

Gentle River at Doctor's Farm

While the ambiance and scenery at Kolad are perfect, I have to pay around Rs.1,000 per person. One reason why you will not see me there every week. At Sidappa’s village, everything was free.

The doctor of the doctor's farm does not stay at Kolad or in the farm (apparently stays at Mumbai). I have not yet met the good doctor of Kolad. Maybe one of these weeks...
