Walk in the Clouds Print

Weekend / Rains

With the opening of Expressway, Lonavala has become a popular day outing.Popular spots at Lonavala get too crowded. To get away from it all and experience monsoons and walking in the clouds, we suggest an easy trek to Korigad fort.

Reaching there: Trek to Koraigad is a day’s outing from Mumbai or Pune. You should start early and reach Lonavala by eight in the morning. Ramakrishna hotel at Lonavala is a good joint for breakfast.  Trek to Koraigad starts from a small village, Shivapur, which is around 20 Kms from Lonavala town. To reach Shivapur village, take the Sahara Lakecity road from Lonavala town. Lonavala lake, Bushi dam which are popular Lonavala spots are along this road. The ride on this well maintained road becomes extremely enjoyable during the monsoons with numerous waterfalls and mist making its appearance now and then.

Park your vehicle at Shivapur village and if you are not much into trekking, hire a guide to show you the way to Koraigad fort. Trek to Koraigad is fairly simple. From the Shivapur village, you need to walk for about 45 minutes thru moderately dense jungle. In monsoons, the walk is extremely pleasant with green canopy. Be prepared to get drenched, as rains are inevitable at Lonavala. Getting drenched is part of the fun. Word of caution: The walk gets slippery during monsoons and you need to wear good pair of shoes.
After the pleasant walk comes the climb over the steps of the fort. Though, the climb is made easy because of the “steps”, it is a steep climb and will take another 45 minutes to reach the top of the mountain and to the Koraigad fort. Along the way, you can see Ganesha temple, caves and granaries. The weather ensures that the climb is not tiring but exhilarating.

Experience on top of Koraigad is sheer magic. During Monsoons, you can literally walk in the clouds and feel mist caressing your face. Mist will play hide and seek with you and when the visibility is good, you will get breathtaking view of Sahara Valley, Mulshi dam and the mountains. Top of Koraigad is like one large tableland with two huge lakes. If you visit Koraigad just after Monsoons, you can see the entire land covered with yellow flowers and is a sight to behold. Plan for couple of hours stay at the top. It will be ideal to pack food and relish the same at Koraigad. Descent back is simpler and in an hour’s time, you can reach Shivapur village.

If you reach Lonavala by eight in the morning, you should be back to Lonavala town by four in the evening. The experience at Koraigad will stay much longer. Trek to Koraigad is one of the best waysto experience Lonavala monsoon magic
